Diff'rent Strokes @ Plan B, Brixton
ON THE first day of Christmas, amidst the crowd that had rolled up to see Prodigy at Brixton's Academy, Diff'rent Strokes @ Plan B was in full festive swing.
Regulars to Diff'rent Strokes know it to be a night that whilst thoroughly South London, manages to transcend set genres and styles through its careful selection of great up and coming acts and DJs.
Kicking things off was Edge 2 Narst who backed by the diverse sounds of producer Jason Air provided an alternative meaning to spoken word, fusing personal London observations with battle chants and a wonderfully contagious energy that along with a decent amount of alcohol soon had the packed dancefloor bouncing in time for DJs XCutz and Chico.
Chico's fast and furious selection of Hip-Hop, Funk, Electro and Broken Beat plus X-Cutz' incredulous scratching skills gave an added element of performance to the already heady party vibe that the pair maintained between the live PAs, which also included a debut performance from a new South London act The Kicks who certainly kicked, despite some understandable nerves from the singers.
Ivory, a firm favourite at the increasingly successful Diff'rent Strokes, headlined the evening with his unique blend of slightly sinister Punk, Grime and Hip Hop alongside an energetic wolfman character, strobe lights and a style that easily satisfied the post-Prodigy gig goers who had found their way to Plan B.
With art and clothing on the walls, mince pies, give aways, live music and percussion, smiling faces are a given at Strokes which aims to bombard its punters with as much sensual stimulus as possible, making for a great night in South London and an even greater beginning to the festive season.
