Foreign Beggars

There was this MC on stage at the end of the last night of Sonar at first he was shouting a bit and I wasn't too keen; then he started bubbling, riding the beats. He was brilliant and I said so to Claire & TomDodd who informed me that he was Pavan from Foreign Beggars (who I'd sort of heard of); and that he'd played their night Plat Du Jour a few times. So I grabbed a couple of photos of him for them which meant luring him to the front of the stage with a couple of come here hand gestures; he subtly slinked to the front of the stage; I snapped then he slinked back. After the gig we all hung out of a whole 36 hours or so; and I've since had the pleasure of seeing Foreign Beggars live at Point Ephereme in Paris. It was like an explosion in a fireworks factory or something like that- as such I'm not at all suprised that they've been nominated for the Best European Hip Hop Award as part of the UMA's.
Look out for their Beggatron Remixed EP dropping soon (I was lucky enough to get a sneak-prehear and it's dope) ; in the meantime you can hear some great Foreign Beggars mixes here.

Was invited to this gig by Tom Yult who was performing with Tanya Auclair at the launch of this year's Offf festival. Great stuff; Tanya's got a beautiful voice and powerful lyrics.

Minds Locked Together
Below is a trailer for Shaun Bloodworth's Mind's Locked Together film created for Mary Anne Hobb's Sonar stage this year; of which the full video can be seen on his personal site.
I was fortunate enough to (finally!) meet Shaun at Sonar this year. What a nice bloke. I'm consistently in awe of his creative genius and this video takes it to another level (although - with no offence to Grevious Angel who provided the soundtrack- I personally prefer to watch it without sound).

Festivaaaaaal!!

Just back from a ridiculously good Glastonbury this weekend and haven't even managed to blog about the ridiculously massive Sonar yet (last weekend); Feel like I'm flying by the seat of my pants which oughta be Orange & White and emblazoned with the name Ryan as an homage to my pilots. The music in the head is undeniably Ravey; 90s resurgance? Yes please.
Little time to breathe in this unusually humid June weather; I think I have a June bug...I JUST WANNA DANCE. So until my heart stops beating so fast and I find time to update more thoroughly; I am leaving you with these photo galleries from Sonar via FACT magazine:

and point those of you who don't blink too often towards my Twitter; Soundcloud and Facebook pages which track my recent movements and memories and currently feelin's through smaller byte-sized Tapas innit.

New Slideshow: Eyes Open [Remains of the Day]
Was invited by Liz Eve to participate in Bristol's Photo Night of the Year on the Christmas Steps. Couldn't pin-point a subject but my feelings were something to do with survival, something to do with freedom; something to do with the everyday; something to do with seeking, something to do with looking at the world through the eyes of an alien;
I started making this with the lights off listening to Godspeed You Black Emperor; until it hit me that Vex'd's music would be even more suited. Jamie (Vex'd) was kind enough to send me a few tunes to chose from; Remains of The Day stuck.
Take a look at Liz's slideshow too:

Completely coincidentally we both chose music by Vex'd.

SAVE PLASTIC PEOPLE
One of the first bits of very important and bad news from home that hit me when I reached these Franco shores was that Plastic People; THE BEST CLUB IN THE WORLD (in not just my own humble opinion); is at risk of being closed down;
I can't be arsed to go into why right now but thankfully Melissa has written this superb article about why it's at risk and why it MUST BE SAVED.

"We're all hung up on someone..."
...I said to my friend Sky last weekend in Tulse Hill's lovely Portuguese Cafe following an amazing night at Plan B in Brixton (hear these related Roska and Subeena mixes) where I spent a portion of the evening, tapping my phone wildly in a drunken declaration of love to the one that i'm hung up on (forever teenage). The sending of the text was halted by a nice man from up North called Lee; he encouraged me to send it but I didn't because by the time we'd finished talking, the club was closing and I was half way sober again. Unfortunately, I lost Lee, my new agony uncle; much to the annoyance of the residents of Brixton who had to endure mine and Sky and Liam and Isa's futile shouts of 'LEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" into the dark winter night lingering over the high street.
Today, I feel like i've been punched in the stomach...maybe it's the rum; maybe it's the lack of food due to the intense packing and organising that has coloured my week, maybe it's Laura Marling... (I just has to turn her off cos I can't take anymore heart wrenching!), probably it's the goodbyes...
L'amour. L'amour... *Le sigh.*
I have no images for you right now. only words.
Sunday, I move to Paris to live! Woop woop it's exciting stuff!
Drumz de Paris coming soon...

Mad About The Boy

An afternoon spent in Croydon. I had to go the bank. My brain seemed to devise a coping-with-dull-concrete-and-shoppers mechanism by sending me visuals of naked people running wildly through fields, across roads; of jumping into huge tides, singing, yelling; all to a soundtrack of "Mad about the Boy." (wtf!!) At home, I listened to Dinah Washington on loop and googled "naked people running." Eventually Ryan McGinley revealed himself. Now I'm crazy about his images.

Sonic Life Cycles
Above is an 8 minute video piece which I made in September for UCL's Creative Edge workshop that I attended with John Eden and Martin Blackdown Clark amongst others http://drumzofthesouth.blogspot.com/2009/09/creative-edge.html
By highlighting that most musical genres and producers, regardless of their Geography, are affected and motivated by similar concerns and issues, I attempted to challenge the central idea of the workshop that London's outer territories give birth to the most interesting artists and art-forms.
The video is also an homage to the music documentary / film which is largely born out of the passion of music fans, or in contrast, media interest.
Please note that it is slightly tongue-in-cheek, not to be taken too seriously!
Thanks to Eden of www.uncarved.org for his collaboration and help with the project and the talk!
