Dubplate Drama
"Redhand is getting roughly bundled into the back of a van by Merk FM… If you think she should answer the phone to Rudy and help Redhand out of his situation, select Dubplate A
But if you think it’s time she decides that she’s in over her head, and should phone the police, select Dubplate B"
So it stinks of Grime cliches but damn it had be hooked when I caught it for the first time last night. Dubplate Drama, is a new, interactive tv drama about a young female producer named Dionne (played by an impressive Shystie) trying to make it big in the world of Grime. Using the same technology that has helped to push the Grime sound into the eyes and ears of the generation of techies that know best how to use it e.g- computers, TV's and phones, it is the viewers who decide the plot, providing yet more freshness to a scene that is consistently breaking new ground.
My thoughts? On the whole, I liked it. Shystie as Dionne had be hooked as did the cameo's of some well known faces including a rather timid sounding Ears.
Traditionally biblical views cropped up in a scene in which a coked up character named D-Brain was animated as the devil getting down with two ladies who appeared as serpents. It was a bit of a surprise but had an interesting message and was done in a style that could only really make me smile and wonder what the kids watching it were thinking.
Great to see and hear Ms Dynamite spitting like she used to do back in the day- hardcore and with an edge to test the sharpest of MC's. I never thought Channel 4 would be the place I'd hear her reppin her old school self again.
Best scene for me was when the landlord of the pub in which Skinnyman and others were freestyling, bowled in with the words "I go out to see the fireworks for 5 minutes and come back to a bloody eskimo dance."
I didn't place my vote for what should happen to Dionne in the next episode but I probably would have done if I was younger as I was the sort of kid that read those books with infinite story-lines. For now I'm interested in the outcome that the other viewers will vote for, particularly as either decision could have a dramatic effect as well as the constant stream of faces and voices that have appeared or are set to appear such as The Murkle Man who recently posted this shouting message on dubplate drama's forum: "LOOK OUT FOR MY SELF JAMMER @ MURKLE MAN STRAIGHT UP NEKKLING IN THE 3 EXTRA CLIPS -IF YOU GOT A 3 FONE DOWNLOAD IT INNIT, IF YOU AIN'T THEN SEKKKKLE! NOTHING LONG, HOLD TIGHT EAREM SCAREM AND NEKKLE CAMP. LETHAL B IS A WASTEMAN. GONE"
Lookin forward to it. Wonder if we'll ever see a dubstep dubplate drama (Youngsta has one every day).
