End of March beginning of April, I was invited to contribute to an exhibition taking place at the Backackra youth hostel in the Southern Swedish countryside. The show was part of an annual Easter tradition in which most galleries and museums plus homes, shops, pubs and tourist sites display art of varying nature. It was a good chance to see parts of Sweden that I've never seen before despite having been a regular visit to the country since the age of 9- it's a beautiful place - clean, spacious, quiet.

Luckily myself and fellow travelling friends - photographer Dean Grenier, Ida Bergsforr plus my good ol' Uncle Barry who now lives in Malmo were able to catch Skream play at Kontra Musik. It was the first Dubstep gig I've reached outsite of Britain and NYC so was interesting to observe people's reactions. The crowd seemed to enjoy themselves but there was none of the usual rewinds, no MC's, generally none of the hype you get on UK dancefloors. The Swede's are a great bunch of people, but pretty serious and neutral when it comes to most things including their dress- beige, greys, black etc.... the sight of a girl dressed in bright green glow in the dark clothing jumping up and down and pushing the button (who else was gonna do it?), must have amused them somewhat.

Big love and thanks to my Swinglish family who put me up and put up with me for nearly 2 weeks. Below are 2 Flickr links, one to mine and one to Dean Grenier's who's visit to Sweden was part of his marathon trip around Europe which began with London in March.

Big ups to those who reached the D.O.T.S warm up in the main room at Diff'rent Strokes. Extra thanks to Kode Squelch Master 9, Benny Ill and Oneman who between them delivered a fine mash up of music. Standard Place crew BLAP BLAP! ROOM 2 WILL be ready for d.o.t.s next Dance n Prance, even if it means hiring dubstepforum members to hijack PLAN B with tools and paintbrushes.

Big <3 and photos on the way

I started DJing in 2000, I got a pair of decks for my 14th birthday.

The first record I bought was 2nd Protocol's 'Breakbeat Science EP' on OZ Records. It was 2 plates with one tune per side and the were hard bassline driven 2step, Whistle Posse type bangers. I started buying Sidewinder and Social Circles stuff and went from there.

It took me about 3 weeks to beat match properly but I was running on belt drive decks for years so I always found it hard to get it bangin. As soon as I played on a pair of 1210s it was on, that’s when I started to learn how to use the mixer, equalizing and shit.

I properly got into music from listenin to garage tapes at school and then finding pirates to listen to it and make my own tapes. Delight fm, Upfront.. at school we'd each have a show in the week we'd tape cos a lot of us were from different ends like I could pick up Upfront cos I’m in Streatham so I'd tape Upfront garage chart show on tuesday, and one guy would get cris reception for Delight cos he lived in Battersea so he'd tape So Solid Sundays etc..

I’ve been playing on radio since November 06. I did a few guest slots on Deapoh's show on SubFM before I joined React FM.

I never really wanted to be on the radio. I just liked trying to pick stations up and listen to them. I rarely knew who'd be playing or what they'd be playin but still, they were bad tunes. I used to just go cotch in the record shop and see what tunes were out hoping one of the 12’s on the racks was one of the tunes I’d heard the night before.

I only started ravin 2004 when I turned 18. I'm just a fwd>> head really… that and DMZ is pretty much my raving past.

Why garage? Because that was the sound for me at that time in that environment. It was heavy. If you look proper into garage its the widest genre of music in the world.

Dubstep because it’s from home.

My favourite animal? Unicorn.

Tonight, inside Kode 9’s record bag.

9's 5

RECORD NO.1
DJ MITSU - 'NEGATIVE ION' (SA-RA REMIX) Planet Groove Japan 2004
Where did you first hear it?
I was in a record shop in Glasgow called Rub-a-Dub. I was hunting for Sa-ra releases that I'd missed and came across this one.
What was your first reaction to it?
I thought it was ok when I first heard it. But it wasn't till I got it home that its hugeness struck me.
Why are you playing it tonight?
The beats are pretty twisted, but its one of the funkiest things I ever heard. The bassline is solid force and its got vocoders and Herbie Hancock type synth strings. I'm playing it tonight cos its one of the sickest tracks I've heard in the last 5 years. Sick. Sick. Sick.

RECORD NO. 2
FLYING LOTUS - 'PET MONSTER SHOTGLASS' (Plug Research) 2006
What does this one make you think of?
This one makes me think of Insect pornography, you know the kind of thing - wasps, bugs and things like that fucking. Its’ a really, squelchy, sticky, chittering tune which takes both dub and hip hop somewhere very strange.
Where's it from and does it sound like where it's from?
Flying Lotus is from LA., part of the Coltrane family tree. I think he's now signed to Warp.
Did it cost a lot?
This track didn't cost me anything. I met with Lotus in Melbourne, Australia last year, and he passed me the tune then.

RECORD NO. 3
MF DOOM/GHOSTFACE KILLER - 'I HEAR VOICES' version 1 & 3
Tell me something you like about the artist?
He wears a mask. Also I just remixed one of his tracks. I like the fact he produces and MCs and his flow is different.
Does it influence your own creative process in anyway?
Yeah, I like to wear masks occassionally myself. He's also got a good ear for a synth earworm, and there is one big one in this tune. The most important thing I go on when I make a tune is what has unconsciously stuck in my head from listening to other music. Just now synth riffs like this are really contagious to me.
How would you like to see people dance when you play it?
Especially the Ghostface vocal makes me shock out.
