Vex'd in Fact

Vex'd have brought me big inspiration this year...ok, we'll call in pure mind expansion. I'll always remember hearing their ghostly and twisted yet madly delicate remix of Toasty's Knowledge for the first time. Check the actual Fact magazine for recent shots of the terrible twosome by the Thames that we collaborated on a few weeks ago...

Skreams from the Radio

Not guilty

Possibly one of the most consistently good producers around at the moment and someone who's been receiving a huge amount of attention over the past few months, Skream's being heard on pretty much every radio station stored in my stereo's memory at the moment.
Having dropped Goat Stare and Request Line last week, Giles Peterson dropped Request Line for the second time on his weekly Radio 1 show and now there are whispers that it might chart...who knows. The boy wonder will also be appearing on The Breezeblock's forthcoming Dubstep Wars alongside Kode9 and Space Ape, Digital Mystikz, Loefah, Vex'd, Hatcha and Distance. Great to hear Radio 1 spreading the sound, John Peel would have been pleased I'm sure. Lock in to 97-99 fm next Tuesday between 1-3am or http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/dance/breezeblock Most importantly, don't forget to tune in to Rinse FM 100.3 which has been playing host to the man himself a lot recently- for archived shows check www.dubstep.blogspot.com

One day in East London

The 22nd of December 2005 will stick out forever.

Had I not made the decision to stay at my friends flat in Brick Lane after a night of French food, copious amounts of wine and Karaoke (no one can test my Boy George skills), I would have never have decided to go shopping around East London the next day.

Had I not photographed Youngsta at The Truman Breweries back in July, I would never have known about the place.

Had I not known of the place, I would never have gone into the art bookstore in the breweries in search of Tracey Emin's latest novel.

Had I not been a bit worried about cash in the run up to christmas, I would have bought the book when I'd seen it instead of deciding to wait until I could get to a highstreet bookstore where I guess it's probably cheaper.

Had I bought the book, I would never have spotted Pete Doherty walking by on the same street on his way to the music store (he's a lot taller in real life).

Had I not received a call advising me to buy the Guardian newspaper, (the reason for which I would find out once I'd read through it), I would never had taken a diversion to find a newsagent on the way back to South via Liverpool Street Station after my shopping spree, and I had I not taken that diversion, Tracey Emin would never have walked past me.

Had I not decided that I couldn't let one of my favourite contemporary artists walk past me, I wouldn't have spoken to Tracey Emin yesterday and found out that whilst she's known for being controversial, she seems like a lovely lady, and one who is somewhat shy.

Had I bought her book earlier, I may now well be in possession of a signed copy, but that's an idea to let go of. As for the Guardian newspaper? Well, had I not have bought it, I wouldn't have read that Mary Ann Hobb's highlight of 2005 was dubstep- with her one's to watch being Digital Mystikz, Loefah, Skream, Distance and Vex'd.

Had I not have seen this, my wonderfully surreal day wouldn't have been quite so good.

Dubplate Drama

"Redhand is getting roughly bundled into the back of a van by Merk FM… If you think she should answer the phone to Rudy and help Redhand out of his situation, select Dubplate A

But if you think it’s time she decides that she’s in over her head, and should phone the police, select Dubplate B"

So it stinks of Grime cliches but damn it had be hooked when I caught it for the first time last night. Dubplate Drama, is a new, interactive tv drama about a young female producer named Dionne (played by an impressive Shystie) trying to make it big in the world of Grime. Using the same technology that has helped to push the Grime sound into the eyes and ears of the generation of techies that know best how to use it e.g- computers, TV's and phones, it is the viewers who decide the plot, providing yet more freshness to a scene that is consistently breaking new ground.

My thoughts? On the whole, I liked it. Shystie as Dionne had be hooked as did the cameo's of some well known faces including a rather timid sounding Ears.

Traditionally biblical views cropped up in a scene in which a coked up character named D-Brain was animated as the devil getting down with two ladies who appeared as serpents. It was a bit of a surprise but had an interesting message and was done in a style that could only really make me smile and wonder what the kids watching it were thinking.

Great to see and hear Ms Dynamite spitting like she used to do back in the day- hardcore and with an edge to test the sharpest of MC's. I never thought Channel 4 would be the place I'd hear her reppin her old school self again.

Best scene for me was when the landlord of the pub in which Skinnyman and others were freestyling, bowled in with the words "I go out to see the fireworks for 5 minutes and come back to a bloody eskimo dance."

I didn't place my vote for what should happen to Dionne in the next episode but I probably would have done if I was younger as I was the sort of kid that read those books with infinite story-lines. For now I'm interested in the outcome that the other viewers will vote for, particularly as either decision could have a dramatic effect as well as the constant stream of faces and voices that have appeared or are set to appear such as The Murkle Man who recently posted this shouting message on dubplate drama's forum: "LOOK OUT FOR MY SELF JAMMER @ MURKLE MAN STRAIGHT UP NEKKLING IN THE 3 EXTRA CLIPS -IF YOU GOT A 3 FONE DOWNLOAD IT INNIT, IF YOU AIN'T THEN SEKKKKLE! NOTHING LONG, HOLD TIGHT EAREM SCAREM AND NEKKLE CAMP. LETHAL B IS A WASTEMAN. GONE"

Lookin forward to it. Wonder if we'll ever see a dubstep dubplate drama (Youngsta has one every day).

Diff'rent Strokes Review

Diff'rent Strokes @ Plan B, Brixton

ON THE first day of Christmas, amidst the crowd that had rolled up to see Prodigy at Brixton's Academy, Diff'rent Strokes @ Plan B was in full festive swing.

Regulars to Diff'rent Strokes know it to be a night that whilst thoroughly South London, manages to transcend set genres and styles through its careful selection of great up and coming acts and DJs.

Kicking things off was Edge 2 Narst who backed by the diverse sounds of producer Jason Air provided an alternative meaning to spoken word, fusing personal London observations with battle chants and a wonderfully contagious energy that along with a decent amount of alcohol soon had the packed dancefloor bouncing in time for DJs XCutz and Chico.

Chico's fast and furious selection of Hip-Hop, Funk, Electro and Broken Beat plus X-Cutz' incredulous scratching skills gave an added element of performance to the already heady party vibe that the pair maintained between the live PAs, which also included a debut performance from a new South London act The Kicks who certainly kicked, despite some understandable nerves from the singers.

Ivory, a firm favourite at the increasingly successful Diff'rent Strokes, headlined the evening with his unique blend of slightly sinister Punk, Grime and Hip Hop alongside an energetic wolfman character, strobe lights and a style that easily satisfied the post-Prodigy gig goers who had found their way to Plan B.

With art and clothing on the walls, mince pies, give aways, live music and percussion, smiling faces are a given at Strokes which aims to bombard its punters with as much sensual stimulus as possible, making for a great night in South London and an even greater beginning to the festive season.

Flyers

DMZ DUB SESSIONS NOV
Originally uploaded by infinite.
Flyers are as much a part of events as the music itself, with the design often being a good indication of what the night or promoter is about. With this in mind, I've always liked to keep old flyers on the site but with a load of new content about to hit drumz, I've decided to keep them just on the flickr account allowing more space for new stuff on the blog. On the first day of Xmas

Outside
Originally uploaded by infinite.
which was 6 days ago, South London sent me to Diff'rent Strokes @ Plan B. There will be a full review in the South London Press this Friday, but in the meantime, check these photos which include some shots taken on the streets of Brixton in between shocking out to Ivory and Edge 2 Narst, who 2 of the finest acts I've seen at Strokes.

..rainy and cold outside, dry, warm and drunken inside. Another typical London evening.

Big up to Mr Junglist-Loefah and Blackdown who between them have provided one of the most interesting interviews I've read in a while www.blackdownsoundboy.blogspot.com Great to hear Loefah's thoughts about living South and even better to hear my home town (norwood!) name checked for all the right reasons.

Also check out Blackdown's Pitchfork review of the year, which you can access through the same address above.
