You know what I'm talking about... a week of pure musical mayhem. Seriously, this week with Roots Manuva, Run The Road at Fabric and Forward will properly renew all of us bogged down by this shit weather. If nothing else, the bass lines coming out of the DMZ allnighter on Saturday will warm up South London for a bit. Yes Yes, DMZ... seems to be almost as highly anticipated as New Years Eve, with the exception that NO-ONE's grumbling that it's gonna be shit.

The next few weeks go like this:

3: Fwd>> @ Plastic People, Wonder, Kode9, Plasticman + Crazy D
4: Roots Manuva and his colossal insight, Brixton Academy
4: Run The Road @ Fabric: Kano, Wiley, D Double E, Riko, Taliban Trim, Bruza , No Lay, Cameo, Mac 10, Semtex and J33
plus 1XTRA Bass with Bailey, Grooverider
5: DMZ Allnighter, 3rd Bass, Mass
Digital Mystikz, Loefah, SGT Pokes, Kode9, Daddi Gee, Youngsta, Skreamz, Chef, SLT Mob, J Da Flex,
12: Technicality Allnighter, secret location and line-up (see www.inperspectiverecords.com for details)
13: Mongrel Music @ Forme(Birmingham) with Digital Mystikz
13: Co-op @ Plastic People with Bugz in The Attic
27: Spectrum @ Blacksheep Bar presents Randall & residents Mek, Skope, Krystal, Logik, Mako, Sgt Pokes

Prize for the best suggestion of what the above picture is of. I have no idea...

TECHNICALITY ALLNIGHTER: 12 MARCH

TECHNICALITY ALLNIGHTER @ Secret Location, East London: 12 MARCH
Right folks, there's no way around it; this is one night that is not to be missed. Last years event which took place in an old studio in East London, drew in a packed crowd from every corner of the world to witness a high quality Inperspective line and special guests Baileyand Paradox. It was an amazingly atmospheric night which had the scent of the old skool about it and to top it off, it took place on my birthday.

This year, the now highly anticipated Technicality All Nighter takes place again in East London, with the exact location and line-up hush-hush until you've ordered your ticket (although we can assume that it will be the usual Inperspective crazy gang plus special guests). Tickets cost £8, and are PRE-BOOK ONLY, which means no turning up on the door with the hope of blagging it. Better get 'em quick, I hear they're selling like hot hash cakes in a hippy commune.

Tickets can be booked via the shop section of the Inperspective website www.inperspectiverecords.com. Line up and venue details will be sent to you with the ticket. Sounds well crafty, but it worked last year beeeeeelllliiiieeeeveee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HEAR THIS: DJ ThinKing

For some months I've been enjoying some mixes by a Bristol based DJ who goes by the name of ThinKing. Whilst I realise that he's about as West as they get, Drumzofthesouth, despite the name can always make room for da outsiders.... in fact, the more the merrier.

A former performer in live Funk and Hip-Hop outfits (that I'm yet to get the names of), ThinKing has been DJing a mix of his eclectic tastes for around 8 years. The latest Broken Beat/Nu Jazz mix, is a selection of everything from the Bugz remix of Nithin Sawney's 'Rainfall', to Roots Manuva and Ty, resulting in half an hour of pure uplifting, jazzy style beats. His wide influences include keys don Herbie Hancock as well as a huge selection of producers that include Cause 4 Concern, Full Cycle, Ray Baretto & Eddie Palmieri,Pete Rock, IG Culture, Darqwan, and the Ammunition labels. That said, ThinKing cites his only real inspiration as being 'truly original music and fresh sounds.'

Happy Birthday Bob

image © Kate Simon

"Life is one big road with lots of signs. So when you riding through the ruts don't complicate your mind. Flee from hate, mischief and jealousy. Don't bury your thoughts. Put your vision to reality, Yeah!"
--Bob Marley from "Wake up and Live"

Strange to think that the man who gave us some of the most astoundingly beautiful and soulful expression of all time would have turned 60 this week (Feb 6). Bob Marley's birthday will be marked with a reminder of his timeless music through channels such as 1Xtra who have dedicated 3 shows to his memory. The Proud Galleries however, have chosen to celebrate Bob Marley's life via a collection of largely unseen images, including those composed by Reggae photographer Kate Simon who described him as "sent from heaven as a photographic subject."

Take A Picture A' Dis takes places at the Proud Gallery Camden Feb 4- April 8th.

FEB'S FWD>>

T'was the first Forward>> of 2005 featuring the low down dirty sub-bass skills of Scientist and Youngsta, followed by 1 Xtra's J Da Flex. Unfortunately I missed Scientist's set but dubplate.net rumour has it that it was damn fine Forward>> debut. Youngsta started his usual low-down-dutty-dub-sub-bass sounds with Loefah's incredible remix of Skreamz 'Moonson'. Other Youngsta drops on the night included Digital Mystikz 'Neverland' still one of the finest tunes around at the moment, and some wicked new dub's by D1. Highlight of the night for me though had to be J Da dropping Roni Size's 'New Forms', underneath a live saxophonist (anyone know his name?). It's been a long time since I've heard that track dropped in a club so to hear it at Forward>> after a superb night of Dub and Bass quite simply took the piss.

Hopefully, there will be some photos online very shortly which I took with my brand new old skool Russian Holga Camera... it looks like a toy but I have faith in old analogue equipment so fingers crossed for some nice weird results....

If you still haven't heard it, check Kode9's latest 'Babel' mix for D1's 'Enigma', Loefah's 'Monsoon remix' and the Mystikz 'Neverland' amongst some other grubby diamonds.

MIX: SEBA METALHEADZ MIX.

Web discovery of the week has got to be http://mix-tapes.goracer.de which gathers the miriad of online mixes and sticks 'em in one place. Check Seba's Metalheadz monthly mix which includes some of the best Drum Funk tracks around at the moment by himself and of course, the beat guru that is Paradox.

Seba is a Swedish drum and bass producer, who like Paradox, is interested in the construction of tunes via the use of damn good breaks. Following his debut "Sonic Winds" which was the 5th release on LTJ Bukem's Good Looking label back in 95, Seba has continued blazing a trail of heavy breaks led DnB, including "Valley of the Moomins," and most recently the incredible '16 stories', a brand new release on the Metalheadz MDZ04 LP. In 1999, Seba set up his label Secret Operations and his sounds also feature on Vibez, Hospital and Bassbin.

Do Daa Do

I've just discovered an old Mixmag cd that I've never listened to called 'Lost Classics." On it is an Acid House Track called "Do Daa Do" by Robotman remixed by Plastikman (not to be mistaken with Grime's Plasticman). I can quite honestly say that despite the vocal samples, it's amazing... not sure that I could take a whole night of this stuff (without the help of some sort of stimulant) but none the less, it's 6 minutes of pure head nodding pleasure. Interestingly my i-tunes played a clip of Random Trio's 'Lost City' straight after it and some how it managed to fit really well.

THE MP3 DEBATE.

Clips, mixes, full length tracks... do we, don't we, do we , don't we....? I've somehow managed to enmesh myself inside a deep and dirty debate on the advantages and disadvantages to both producer and audience of downloading Mp3's on fellow blogger Nick Gutterbreakz site.

Read all about it...and whilst you're there, check Kode9's amazing Babel mix mp3 (something I do agree with), a mash-up of the best tunes in Grime and Dubstep at the moment...
