War for '94 / Drumz V.I.P

The year of the Wonder-bra, the international year of the family and in Drum n Bass terms- the year when Amen and vocals really infiltrated the sound.

Thanks to Bailey for letting me sit in on this week's Intasound show on which he provided listeners with wonderful mix and blend of some of the best tunes of what was a truly fertile year for DnB.

Paris-Texas

A story of two people

I first found out about the movie Paris, Texas via my friend Francky 'the Flasck' who played me the soundtrack back in April. Unfortunately, he only had a copy of it on mini-disc which meant that anytime I wanted to hear it, I had to knock on his door. The next time I heard it was purposeful. I had the overwhelming feeling that I needed to cry so I knocked on his door and asked to listen to the track 'I knew these people,' and proceeded to flood the room until I had nothing left but laughter. A story of intense passion between a couple that simply becomes too much for them to deal with, to this day, 'I knew these people' is the most tragically beautiful story I've ever heard and for that reason, I simply have to share it.

In my mind, this clip from the film doesn't come close to hearing Harry Dean Stanton's monologue and Ry Cooder's guitar chords echoing in a room South London but I'm sure that when watched as part of the whole film, it's equally as powerful. Despite confirmation that it's a good un from the countless people I've spoken to whilst my quest to find the soundtrack on cd (which finished yesterday, thanks once again to Franck), I'm unsure if I want to see teh film in case it doesn't live up to the soundtrack. Oneday I will for sure, but I'll try and wait until the story has been lost from my memory with the hope that it will have the same impact it had on me as it did the first couple of times I heard it. This is an example of why I love I sound so very much. Enjoy.

MTV Bass

Dubstep - MTV Base

A few months old but definitely still relevant, MTV Base's 'About To Blow' is a pretty nice insight into the sound- pirate to mainstream radio, dubplate to dancefloor.

"Callin all warriors, all Xena's"

This Friday's launch of Mary Anne Hobbs Warrior Dubz compilation at Mass looks set to be pretty historic. It's one of the most unusual line up's I've seen in a while, bringing together artists from across the spectrum of current electronic musical styles and hopefully breakin some barriers in the long run. Continuing to educate the masses in the way of new music, very few radio DJ's are as consistent in their openmindedness and passion as Mary-Anne.

"What is Croydon Techno?"

Fuk knows.

Billed as being 'Straight Outta Croydon' in last week's Time Out, Dubstep has now reached The Saturday Telegraph.

Here are some extracts:

"Many of the music's leading figures are based in the bleak south London suburb of Croydon, leading some to call it "Croydon techno..."

"Dubstep can, at its worst, sound like unfunky white man's reggae,"

lol!

"Fuelled by internet forums and a community spirit that contrasts starkly with the individualism of grime, the music looks set to overcome its problematic name and any residual trainspotting tendencies on its journey to national and international recognition."

Agent Fish-Eye

Lovin' Claire Emeh's eye for grainy, high contrast and strangely distorted images as manifested in the above images. Further images from last months brilliant Bash featuring Trevor Sax, Tippa Irie, Loefah, The Bug, Warrior Queen and one of my new favourite poets, Crisis can be found here

She's got a knack for giving familiar subjects and places a weirdly rounded perspective. It's like looking through a spy hole in a door.

What is Maximal Minimalism anyway?

Cerith Wyn Evans' so called 'Maximal-Minimalist' exhibition 'take my eyes and through them see you' at the ICA was cluttered with noise and pollution; pots plants, over-bearing white walls, huge windows.

Okay, so the actual visual element of the piece that the exhibition was named after is minimal: two rolls of blank film -one collecting the room's dust, the other collecting the scratches caused by repeated projection on to the screen. I like the idea, but came away slightly stressed by the mess of it all:

One of the works was broken upon arrival, the film projector of the other one was so noisy that it was difficult concentrate on the actual film. That eventually broke too.

The lady on guard (who'd previously attempted to introduce the exhibition yet was of little help when I questioned the suspiciously placed pot plants) attempted to fix the machine that had broken down but to no avail. So I left via another piece-'Please pay attention Motherfucker' - a stuffed magpie.

On hindsight, I'm hoping it was a set-up. That would have been truly contemporary.

I'm still yet to read all of the text heavy minimalist-maximalism-whatever brochure that came with the show. Maybe now's the time.

Beam me up Scotty

This much I know...

Kode9 makes incredible music. Cinematic sound scapes.

He's from Scotland originally; relocated to Camberwell (South London) where he writes about viruses and sonic warfare.

He doesn't wear a kilt when DJing, but if he did, I suspect it would be made by Adidas

He creates space which The Space Ape inhabits.

The Space Ape is a philosophising, fear inducing poet straight out of a "lyrical black hole."

The pair actively promote audio addiction.

Kode9 was one of the first pioneers of the sound that earthlings classify as Dubstep; He consistently pushes boundaries and jumps barriers. No Oyster Card needed.

9 is the founder of Hyperdub. He's had a lot of 1's:

1st Dubstep label to commission a video- 9 Samurai (see www.myspace.com/kode9)
1st Dubstep artist to use the internet to full effect:

www.hyperdub.net
www.myspace.com/hyperdub
www.kode9.com
http://kode9.blogspot.com
www.myspace.com/kode9
www.bleep.com

1st label to release Burial material
1st dubstep label to release an album on a metal disc
1st dubstep label to wholly embrace, promote and support vocals and lyrics beyond samples. (see Pressure feat. Warrior Queen)

My favourite label by light years. My favourite sign of the times. A record of Memories of the Future and for the record, they're beautiful.
