Metalheadz @ Herbal, Old Skool Reunion, 24/06/05

Recently a DnB friend spoke of the 'Call from Goldie' which like an urban myth is something that up and coming dnb heads will never quite believe until they've experienced it for themselves. Wistfully he added that recently a few new names had finally received the call, most of them feeling a mixture of fear and disbelief when the voice of Metalheadz called them to join the ranks amongst the likes of Bailey, Randall, Flight and Klute, a moment that I could only liken to a photographer receiving a call from Magnum.

Two days preceding this conversation and I'm crammed against the edge of Herbal's sweaty walls for a Metalheadz oldskool reunion, ears receiving a battering from the bins in the corner and the sound of the beer bottles marching off the shelves to their deaths. There's no space to move let alone to apply the necessary appreciation to the legendary sounds that engulf the crowd and I’m losing water faster than I can possibly gain it. Yet, here comes Goldie walking easily through the packed dancefloor like Moses through the Red Sea, no effort needed. Golden teeth, golden skin, blue eyes, brightly coloured Headz clothing, looking as ever like he was born to be an idol with Fats singing his arrival as another classic Headz tune is dropped. As Goldie jumps around calling for rewinds, I'm wondering how after over 10 years as one of DnB's most prolific producer/label man/actor he's still got the energy to party harder than the crowd but looking around me, I can see the answer. Blowing out the bass bins in front of him is Bailey the young prodigy that Goldie brought through to Headz at a young age and who's since made such strong waves on the scene that he's managed to sail all the way around the world flying the Metalheadz skull and crossbones. To Bailey's left is Storm, the original first lady of Metalheadz, known throughout as one of the UK’s finest female DJ’s, her face lighting up upon the sight of Goldie's antics. Fats and the Flux are on the mic and various other big names are lurking around clinking Moet glasses whilst transporters surround the booth and the younger faces in the crowd go mad to sounds that were made whilst they were still in short trousers.

I smile as I grab my camera bag, my eyes wide with the knowledge that this Metalheadz reunion will make for an inspired chapter in my DnB album, only to find that my batteries are completely flat and I am without charger. This happens to all photographers from time to time but typically, it's happened on what feels like a tardis journey to the underground music scene of early 90's London. Resigned to make do with memories, and hit with the realisation that that I'm even further away from Magnum's call, I head to the bar during Storms set, desperately in need of rehydration in what is one of the hottest party's of the year so far. Waiting at the bar, I watch the faces of the other thirsty people change to fit each of the tunes that Storm plays- Unofficial Ghost locking everyone's eyes on to each others in search of mutual celebration. I'm pissed cos I want to burst through the crowd that locks me tight into a stubborn position at the bar to loosen up on the dancefloor but I'm stuck fast until I have a drink in my hand. Luckily, Storm must have heard my thoughts and edge rolls the tune, giving me time to finish a drink and head off in time for the killer break down.

Two hours later, exhausted and messy and I find myself being cuddled by the sofa’s of the guest lounge. I've bumped into Ben XO and we're dissecting the memories of early Dogsonacid days during which we'd dance to the different strands of the genre that Metalheadz was at the beginning of. Himself a producer, DJ and essential dnb head, Ben tells me that there's still a lot going on in Drum n Bass- it's more international, Europe and America not so far behind as they used to be. As a result we've seen many of our friends flourishing in the after currents of it's mass-success, many of whom are at here at Metalheadz. Chris Bassbin, Skopes, Tendai and various members of the Inperspective family are all downstairs dancing to the sounds that have strongly influenced their own.

Tonight though was about Bailey and Storm, between them providing a 2 hour mix of big, dark and dubby tunes as Bass II Dark, Jah Know Ya Big, Your Sound and Black Rose. It induces a slightly sick feeling of regret for missing out on the Bluenote era but I’m happy. The sound at Herbal was better than usual, I've had a wicked time and judging by the wrecked characters crawling outside afterwards, so has everyone else. Goldie can smile all he wants.

Crash! Bang! Wallop!

Colloborating in my head at the moment are Roisin Murphy, Skream (anyone hear his latest work of art on Youngsta's show the other day?!), Fourtet, D1, Bugz and Metalheadz and of all people Curtis Mayfield (Make Me Believe In You- Patti Jo) inspiring me to get on those keys and jangle them myself. Previous attempts at production have only really consisted of providing samples and ideas to producers but now the frustration of not being able to at least try and record the beats in my head is pushing me to start learning. I have my first proper lesson tommorrow with a friend who uses a combination of software. Question is, what do I get for home use on my own? From what I hear, Reason is the way forward, but many people have recommended Fruity Loops and Cubase. Damn, I have no idea about the differences between this lot and I haven't even started on Pro Tools and Logic and Garage Band which I gather is for absolute-beginners? Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, if I'm gonna be a soundgyal I'm gonna need a whole lot of help.

I've been somewhat excited... yesterday I got caught up in the hippy vibe that Breezy from Size9 brings, happily jumping at the chance of a free adventure to Glastonbury. Apparently she's heard of a fool proof way of getting in with a ticket... slightly scary but none the less worth a shot. So, as a result I've been planning my outfits: flip-flops? jeans? t-shirts? vest? skirt? and what to bring ever since (girl!), forgetting of course to check the forecast until right now. Suddenly I aint so excited.

After what was a pretty quiet Forward>> in the first week of June, the second one on the 16th had somewhat more of a party vibe. Yet again (following on from this post) Jammer, Skepta and their boyz jumped on the mic inspired by Youngsta's jaw dropping deck styles and tune selection (Skream guilty again), as well as an appearance from Riko earlier on in the evening. D1 and N-Type made their nervous Forward>> debuts after years of bashing out dubs and DJing elsewhere. Both took the chance to play some fresh beats - a particular tune that stayed with me being N-Types bouncy number Way of the Dub. Big admiration for all the MC's representing of late, each has brought their own specific style of rhyme and reason to Fwd>> whilst fully enriching the crowd specifically at the FWD just gone.

Wild Wild West

So LongMuch fun and peace felt in Bristol this weekend, which was largely due to finding myself in places amongst some of the city's finest musicians, DJs and artist types. After bumping into a very calm and quiet D-Bridge buying pasta in Sainsbury's, I later found Dylan & Robyn lounging in the dub chill out room at one of the three house parties that were going on over the course of the weekend where 2 of King-Pin's DJs introduced me to the beautiful sounds of a producer called Nathan Fake and blessed me with the most enjoyable Techno-Breaks set that I've ever experienced. Following by a wicked set of Techy DnB from DJ Kulak, Locus promoter extraordinare Rit kindly saved me from being stranded in the middle of no where and gave me a good early morning tour of the city in the meantime. Shouts to Pinchy who I bumped in to all too briefly on the Saturday whilst on the way to a Chav themed House night at Timbuktu. As dubious as it sounds, it turned out to be one fo the funniest nights I've ever been to and mashed me up so much that by Sunday all I could do was veg at Mako's. His exceptional Photek mix which I hope to make available soon truly iced the weekend cake and not forgetting shouts to Jemma and friends and their porno playing cards, Mr Magman and his Maths lessons (Fractals are cool kids) and of course the Muller man aka Reform who didn't batter an eyelid whilst I frequently nicked his PSP for some Puzzle Bobble action. Big thanks to all... xxx

The Sound of Suspense....

Three cowboys wait for a train in the heat of the midday sun. A rusty rail road sign creaks in it's hinges, breaking the intense silence. A train pulls in, leaving nothing but the sound of an eerie Harmonica looping over and over. Inspired by Sergio Leone's 'Once Upon A Time In The West' which as a result of both sound and image is undoubtedly one of the most moving films I've ever experienced, I've been looking on the web for articles about the use of sound in film. Filmsound.org appears to be the place to go and below is what Randy Thom (nice name) feels are the talents that can be attibuted to film-sound. Fittingly, reading this has helped me to understand the reasons why music not specifially made for film can feel very cinematic, the obvious examples being Pink Floyd, Cinematic Orchestra, Godspeed You Black Emperor (GYBE) and Radiohead's later stuff (love for all of these). Much more recently and closer to home, I feel that D1 is a master of cine music in the making, Blackdown and Dusk's 'Drenched' which opens with the sound of a rainy train ride well and truly sets a scene, the wise old slightly mystical Jamaican character known as Spaceape who frequents Kode9's aural environments, Loefah's use of film dialogue to create the tensest of suspense at the beginning of Goat Stare and Horror Show, FBC Fabric who in places is seemingly influenced by Spaghetti Western's and like Kode9 has the bonus of verse to thicken the plot, Skopes who's got an epic futuristic sounding wannabe film score in the making (working title of I Came Down), Horsepower Productions who have been doing it for years and many more that I haven't mentioned. Shouts to all of you potential film sound designers- now we just need to find some willing film writers and directors to create some film specifically to match the music...

There's No Place Like Home?

As someone who missed out on the Jungle sounds of 93-96 as they were happening, I’ve been kinda lucky to be able to experience a least a fraction of what the Jungle Rave was like via the references, mixes and sets that have been cropping up around me over the past few months.

This mix from Kid Kameleon courtesy of Gutterbreakz focuses not on the old school sounds but on new Ragga-Jungle, but still works as a prescription for those looking for a path to memory lane whilst keeping their feet firmly on the sounds and influences of now. Geographically, as Kid K says in the post, this relatively small but vibrant scene has no real home to speak of and instead travels from city to city allowing it to be picked up and shaped to suit the tastes of different groups and cultures, something which is very obvious in the mix.

Interestingly, as part of what is more than just a breakdown of Ragga Jungle, Kid K also explains the concept of ‘Outsider Artists,’ which he defines as being those who ‘musically draw on the sounds of a scene without being physically present,’ in this instance using Grime as an example, resulting in hours of thought about my opposite experiences and observations as an 'Insider Listener.'

As we Londoners ourselves know, Londoners are not particularly patriotic of the UK, or in fact London as a whole- choosing to express most love and pride towards the particular part of London that we feel most connection with. Whilst I have a huge appetite for the many weird and wonderful things that this country and indeed the whole world has to offer, as a born and bred South London, actual red hot passion for the UK doesn’t extend much further than the boroughs of Lewisham (south east), Lambeth and Merton (south central and south west), Croydon (south) where my musical preferences reside to aurally represent an environment and experiences familiar to me. (Big Dada, DMZ and Inperspective to name just a few).

This love of familiar environments and home comforts whether manifested through the music we choose or the food we eat, if embodied in other cities could explain why St George’s day celebrations are now pretty much null and void. So preoccupied are we with celebrating the particulars of our own particular compass point, that we simply haven’t got the time or inclination to even consider celebrating the island that the compass points are part of.

Musically, expression of pride for an exact location has always been a given. In UK terms, patriotism for the UK as whole is only really displayed in football songs and and in London terms, Grime MC’s probably have the easiest platform to express pride, at least in comparison to Dubstep which devoid of lyrics has to find other ways to show devotion to it’s home, usually through the titles of the tunes and art-work.

With this is mind, it seems to make sense that Loefah and Digital Mystikz, who have been based in South London for years have a tendency to play sets constructed purely of tracks by fellow South Londoners which naturally share similar vibes to their own, whilst Kode9 who (although an honorary South Londoner), originally from Scotland, considers London and its sounds as one entity, reflected in his sets that mix up the sounds of many areas and reinforcing his feelings expressed in Blackdown's Fusion Confusion post that ‘if you think they're separate strains - you're too close to them.’

This preoccupation that a Londoner holds for his or her particular area coupled with a need to narrate and celebrate the journeys experienced within it might also help to explain why East London’s Grime artists and South London’s Dubstep artists (with a few exceptions- notably South London’s Plasticman) have remained pretty separate, making no attempt to share the overall ‘Grime’ category that everyone from Rephlex to Radio 1 has lumped both these sounds and their off shoots into.

Somewhat ironically, just as the two are finally becoming openly identified and accepted in the media as two separate but not completely unconnected entities (for example Mary-Anne Hobb's recent Grime and Dubstep special), there's a scent of a merger of the two areas in the air, most recently noted by Blackdown in the same fusion confusion post.

This prediction that things are set to merge might seem like no biggy, particularly as individually they too are hybrids of a merger gone before; but for two of London's biggest underground sounds- one of which is often criticised as growing too slowly and the other too fast, it is something that could either make or break either or both of them. Recent reactions on dubplate.net to Forward's>> forthcoming lineup are a good example of the uncomfortable feeling that unpredictability and change bring. As a result of seeing that a club night known predominantly for Southside’s Dubstep sounds is extending it’s hand to East London’s Grime, it’s all kicked off, whether they realise it or not with South moaning about East , East moaning about South and West moaning (or at least others on behalf of West) at everyone for leaving them out in the first place. Where North fits in to any of this, I don't know, so someone please shed some light.

Personally speaking, I can't make my mind up. On one hand I feel somewhat sadly that a merger will only speed up the inevitable journey away from the original source that every music scene appears to go through and on the other hand I feel happy knowing that the two music scenes will be able to borrow from each others strengths (as in Loefah's Lightz feat. Nasty Crew) thus giving them more momentum. In the same way that the 4 very different characters of the Wizard of Oz only got to their destination as a result of collaboration, they also worried that they'd never be able to return home, which in 21st-century-South-London-musical-me-terms will probably manifest in 10 years time when I'll be longing for the sounds of my home as I hear them now, in the same way that Jungle heads annoy DnB heads by pining for Jungle as they heard it 'back in the day.'

Last night's Forward>> was fairly quiet crowd-wise but ridiculously loud and heavy sound wise. I had no energy to dance so was resigned to skulking round the back alongside birthday boy Skream (congrats), wasteman Youngsta and an illin D1 who made his Forward>> debut with the flu (i feel ya pain son), and still managed a wicked set. Despite technical itches, SLT's Q Gritty also hit with a fine bag of tricks that included everything from Toasty breaks which always sound good on the dancefloor to a luvverly dubwise roller from SLT'S Dangerous as did Tubby who as ever, mixed things up nicely.

A little bird told me that the Mob will be playing in Paris next week so you'll get the chance to hear Vicious MC (centre), hitting with some French rhymes (but only for the ladies). Ooh la la...

Before I forget, big up to Kode9 who's been off the airwaves for 10 weeks during which has decided to delve into the world of comedy as heard exclusively on last nights Rinse show. Kodak, if you're thinking Edinburgh festival, you really need to practise your delivery first...maybe learn from Task who was also on a jokes tip last night on Youngsta's show...Q: What's the best glue? A: Sperm.. have u ever seen a baby fall apart?

"I've been working on a project called 'Truly British' which will be lauched for an entire season @ Harrods on Sept 5th. It is based on all true British Brands like Paul Smith, Vivian Westwood, Burberry, Jaques of London, Heinz, Marmite etc with a bit of a twist!

Last night I was invited to the offical press launch where they exhibited my Urban Croquet set Redesign to over 200 press alongside Paul Smith's Triumph motorbike design and peices from Vivan Westwood etc. The night involved the Royal London ballet performing to the Chemical Brothers (which was f**king weird!) and loads of other sh*t! FBC Fabric and Reindeer (f-f-f fresh out of Croydonia) on the Buttercuts label. Got hold of their debut album 'It's not who you know it's whom you know' last week and have been playing it on loop ever since. Some of the finest poetry I've heard in an awfully long time and experimental styles reminiscent of cLOUDEAD. I love this kinda shit so along with the sunshine, I'm in my absolute element. Great to hear that they too are receiving Radio play, seems not all commercial DJ's are deaf to the underground sounds that rumble beneath.

Martin Clark's pitchforkmedia.com column- so much gushing about DMZ, he makes us look like we hate it.
