DMZ UPDATE

DIGITAL MYSTIKZ
Originally uploaded by infinite.
::DMZ:002::

DMZ have been shakin our souls all summer on the dancefloors of Forward>>, The End and most recently, Context in Bristol where Loefah and Sgt Pokes absolutely mashed it up alongside Random Trio's Cyrus.

After a constant flow of dubs from the ever hardworkin souljah's of Dubstep, the Digital Mystikz and Loefah are hittin us with DMZ:002 to be released in October.

The release sees some of the biggest tunes to emerge from the scene over the past few months including the Digital Mystikz incredible Lost City and 10 Dread Commandments plus Loefah's dark and dutty Horror Show which have been rinsed by the likes of Kode 9, Youngsta and Joe Nice. Tp's will be floatin around certain shops soon so keep your ear to the sphere.

::DMZ DUBSESSION, 7 November, The Black Sheep Bar, Croydon::

After last months killa night of beats and bass from Youngsta, Skream, Cyrus (Random Trio) and Benny Ill, DMZ return to South London with a November dub injection to keep the blues away. DMZ have already built up a reputation for hosting a show that delivers the freshest names on the Dubstep circuit and what with Mala (Digital Mystikz), Hatcha, Kode 9 and Chef representing, they'll will undoubtedly strengthen they're reputation for the best in dubby flavas.. It's also gotta be said that yet again, they've hit with another f****** heavy flyer.

Check www.blacksheepbar.com/bsb/dubstep/htm for further details on Dub Sessions. Photos from Septembers event can be found here

::DIGITAL MYSTIKZ AND LOEFAH ON GRIME 2 ALBUM::

As if all of that aint enough, the Mystikz alongside Loefah and Kode 9 have hooked up with Rephlex for the second in the GRIME releases. This time round, Rephlex have gone for a more bass-driven, less vocal release which is sure to set some bedrooms and dancefloors on fire.

Tracks include Digital Mystikz: Awake and Country Man plus Loefah's: Bombay Squad and Fire Elements. Check audio clips here.

ARCHIVED EVENT: ALASKA/PARADOX LP LAUNCH

PARADOX2.JPG

Despite being jet-lagged, cold and illin, the prodigious producer that is Paradox/Alaska (try sayin that when ur drunk) made his way East via Herbal for the launch of his new lp Virtual Virtuosos. Herbal wasn't its usual spirited self but none the less, Paradox's incredible live set along with DJ sets from Equinox, Senses, Subject 13 and First Wave Digital who between them rolled out tunes from the likes of Photek, Seba and Source Direct made it a wicked night. Click HERE or on Paradox's twisted Hi-Top to view photo's from the night.

Paradox also took some time out to chat to DoTS about a wide range of subjects including beats, MCs and lesbian film soundtracks (no lie)... keep your eyes peeled for the full interview on DoTS soon.

Finally, Paradox performed live on L Double's 1XTRA show last Tuesday (September 21) where he chatted to L-Double and caused general mayhem in the 1Xtra studios. Seems they weren't quite ready for the little man with the big breaks. Check www.bbc.co.uk/1xtra/drumbass to hear the show and see photos.

Next live Paradox UK Perfomance is OCT 27 @ Cargo. Click HERE for details.

BIG DADA Update

Time to get rollin with some UK Hip Hop news. No better place to start than South London's finest BIG DADA records. A sub-label of Ninja Tune and home to Roots Manuva,TY and Infinite Livez amongst many others, Big Dada continues to stick two fingers up to the music industry by thinkin outside of the box with underground sounds and experimental beats. Big up Big Dadadadadada.....

Roots Manuva

Sources have revealed that Mr Manuva has an army of the illest producers currently workin on some remixes from him, including Madlib and The Soft Pink Truth (one half of Matmos). Watch this virtual square for Roots Manuva, and let's keep our cold Autumnal fingers crossed that he'll be hittin da South with some shows in the new year. (Plllleeeaaassse?!!!!!!)

DIPLO

Diplo... yeah the geez is a yank but we'll allow him cos he's on a South London label and makes wicked beats. Currently workin on beats for Kano (679 Records) and M.I.A (Xl Recordings), Diplo fuses electro beats with delicate instrumentals and samples that you'll ponder over for ages. His latest work of art is the long awaited Florida LP which although largely instrumental album is blessed by vocals from Vybez Cartel and P.E.A.C.E. (the Freestyle Fellowship legend). I've heard a preview and it's HEAVY. Catch him in Europe in October with Mr Scruff and Dj Food.

Florida LP is out now. Click Here for sound bites and further info.

TY

(Is it just me, or is TY like the sensible Uncle of the Hip-Hop World?) So he didn't win the Mercury Music Prize, but at least that means he'll avoid the much talked about curse of the Mercury Music Prize (which is a load of pony cos Roni Size is still around aint he?!).

Anyway, Big Dada have released a download single. "Look 4 Me," (a recent contribution to Giles Peterson's* "Worldwide Exclusives" compilation), "Sophisticated & Coarse" and even a video of TY and his band doing  the "Look 4 Me" thing live at the Montreux Festival this summer. If you are a fan of the talents of the ridiculously great Eska (Ty's wicked backing singer) as well as Ty himself, you'll  want the lot. It's available via: http://downloads.7digital.com/downloads/ty/default.asp?partner=135

* Did anyone else know that Giles Peterson has a WHOLE HOUSE just for his record collection? Madness...

PROFILE: GOURMET BEATS RADIO

Dubstep has it's very own U.S ambassador in the form of Mr Joe Nice. Baltimore's Joe Nice has been spinning beats for some time but it was a 2 cd set called Pure Garage by Masterstepz that got him hooked on the Garage sound. Digging deeper into the sound he found the underground and is now hooked on all things beat led and Bass heavy. You can find Joe Nice on Gourmet Beats Radio alongside DJ's such as Light Touch and Ill Kidcovering a wide range of genres including Breaks, House and Drum n Bass. His most recent webcast on Gourmet Beats Radio saw a killer tracklist with the finest beats from Digital Mystikz, Loefah, Random Trio, Distance, Toasty and Plastic Man.

GRIME 2 RELEASE: 25 OCTOBER

GRIME 2 REPHLEX CAT 160 CD 2 x LP released October 25th

Rephlex are hitting us with some beats that are sure to warm our souls this Autumn. GRIME 2 is out on October the 25 and features our favourite artists: Digital Mystikz, Loefah and Kode 9. These South London bass-criminals have been shakin and defining the Dubstep scene for sometime and Grime 2 is sure to send a few shock waves to those still asleep at the back.

Here's the Rephlex loe down:

"Grime, dubstep, sublow whatever. We're back here again but this is a new story.

The artists we've chosen for our second Grime showcase have a paradigm shift in perspective from the world of angry grime mc's, instead of "this is my reality of the world and I can't do anything about it except portray and repeat the anger", their stance doesn't accept that as all there is. These tracks evoke a quietly positive, dub wise, global sonic scavenging, open stance, change your perception and change around you is but a logical consequence, aggression carefully honed into a delicate art.

However, the music is always pinned down with an unmistakably real, heavy subbase; take pleasure in the pressure.

Kode9: Tracks 1) Swarm 2) Sub-Kontinent 3) Dislokated 9) Ping

Hailing from an alien land, Kode9 washed up noisily in South London in 1997. He is now resident dj at Fwd>>> at London's Plastic People, and has been hosting a weekly show on Rinse FM 100.3 (Thursdays 7-9pm) since early 2003. He is known for his dubbed out skank and prolonged twisted mixing style. He hosted the "Hyperdub Transmission" show on groovetech.com for 2 years and promoted the Hyperdub sessions in Brixton in 2001. Since then he has been spotted at the Notting Hill Carnival, all over Europe and on his Planet Grime tour in the summer of 2003.

In 2004, Kode9 set up the Hyperdub label to release an armoury of accelerated and decelerated dub and dancehall influenced beats featuring the enigmatic Daddi Gee on vox. The label started with the highly acclaimed Sign of the Dub, a strange beatless cover of Prince's "Sign of the Times" and "Stalker", a seedy mutation of the Junior Boys "High Come Down." The second release forthcoming is "Spit" and is an unlikely version of a militant rap classic.

Loefah Tracks: 5)Bombay Squad 6) Fire Elements 7) Beat them

From Norwood, SE London, grew up listening to hardcore and its transition through jungle into D&B. started mixing in 1996 by 1999 was playing out, began basic production in 2000. 2001, got a long term girlfriend and the music got lost. 2003.....feb...discovered fwd......july....dumped girlfriend, played Dj Hatcha my first tunes;"indian" and "twisup"........august......indian and twisup get played at Fwd.......oct.....sign 4 trax (including indian) to big apple records.2004....Jan. multitude of dubplates being played on rinse100.3 and at fwd. Digital Mystikz: 8) Awake 9) Country man 10) CR7 Chamber

Digital Mystikz other wise known as Mala and Coki first met in their early teens, and later became devoted to sound through Jungle.

They later got into garage but got sick of all the bling, however they started writing music and going to forward for the first time made them realise that some of their tracks could fit into that scene.

The duo's first release was the massive "Pathwayz" on Big Apple records, followed closely by the "Twisup" ep on their own label DMZ. (Which they set up with Loefah) This EP also became a favourite with the scene, with the "bassline opening the ground up from under your feet" heaviness of "B" being a standout

"It's a natural thing "said Coki in a recent interview in Deuce magazine,"when I go home and sit down in front of the computer it's something I feel from within"

"Music's about meditation and education." Mala added, "If it ain't got the two for me then I don't really get involved."

PROFILE: TEMPO TANTRUM

BAILEY
Originally uploaded by infinite.
Tempo Tantrum has been bringing underground beats to London for 4 years now. In that time, the night has gone from strength to strength, moving from Clerkenwell to Brixton and gaining a loyal following in the process. Guests welcomed behind the decks have included Total Science, DJ Bailey, Klute, Tipper, Domu, Horsepower Productions, J Da Flex, Aquasky, DJ DeeKline and Marcus Intalex.

True to its name, the night has made a name for itself by representing the full spectrum of beats, joining the dots between DnB, dubstep, breaks and broken beat. Dark or jazzy, Tempo Tantrum reflects South London's rich underground heritage, from rolling DnB to croydon-style dubstep as well as lighter broken beat flavours.

Tempo Tantrum has also launched its own record label, with two releases so far, both by Reza. The first was a Mixmag Single of the Month and the second has been licensed to various compilations, entering the DJ Mag beats and breaks chart. The next Tempo Tantrum release is set to hit the shelves before the end of 2004.
