Big love to Mary-Anne Hobbs and the Breezeblock show who on Tuesday provided the history books with one of the most beautiful moments in dubstep and let me come along for the ride.

At first it felt a little weird being in a darkened studio full of mic's and equipment (especially for one as clumsy as myself) but Mala, Kode9 & Space Ape, Skream, Hatcha & Crazy D, Vex'd, Loefah & Sgt Pokes and Distance
plus an entourage that included Coki, Benga, Chef and The Bug soon made themselves comfortable.

Each DJ was allocated 15 minutes during which time each of them quite literally tore up the radio waves in their own unique way. The mixing was ridiculous, the tunes were big and bad, and the vibe, well, even my Mum said she could feel the excitement through the airwaves.

What was so good about the show was the selection of DJ's. Mala with his deep, meditative beats, Kode9's soundscapes, Space Ape's words and wisdom, Skream's pure energy, Hatcha and Crazy D's funtime, the edgey but beautiful sounds of Vex'd, Loefah's psychologically devastating half-step minimalism with Poke's on mic and the heavy metal sounds of Distance. The interviews gave that extra bit of education. If you didn't know about dubstep before, this show was one helluva introduction.

In fact, somebody in the studio even whispered that if the place was set on fire, dubstep would be wiped out. They weren't far from the truth. Speaking of fire, I wonder if Steve Lamacq who walked into the smokers room when nuff dubstep man dem were fogging it up had the faintest idea of what was going on.

Go to www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/dance/breezeblock Listen again, and whilst you're there, take a peek at their fantastic photos (you might even spot me in the back!) and exclusive signed vinyl competition (great question!). More of their photos can be seen at www.dubstep.blogspot.com and my own will hopefully be online a little later.

Skreams from the Radio

Possibly one of the most consistently good producers around at the moment and someone who's been receiving a huge amount of attention over the past few months, Skream's being heard on pretty much every radio station stored in my stereo's memory at the moment.
Having dropped Goat Stare and Request Line last week, Giles Peterson dropped Request Line for the second time on his weekly Radio 1 show and now there are whispers that it might chart...who knows. The boy wonder will also be appearing on The Breezeblock's forthcoming Dubstep Wars alongside Kode9 and Space Ape, Digital Mystikz, Loefah, Vex'd, Hatcha and Distance. Great to hear Radio 1 spreading the sound, John Peel would have been pleased I'm sure. Lock in to 97-99 fm next Tuesday between 1-3am or http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/dance/breezeblock Most importantly, don't forget to tune in to Rinse FM 100.3 which has been playing host to the man himself a lot recently- for archived shows check www.dubstep.blogspot.com

Prang'd

How the funk do they do this to me? Even in my comfortable bedroom environment, Vex'd scare the shizzle out of me, no more so than during their remix of Toasty's Knowledge as featured on this week's Breezeblock show. For some reason, knowing the original Knowledge inside and out makes it all that much weirder; the Vex'd remix adding pure filth and horror, to the innocence and playfulness of the original Knowledge making it all that more twisted. Because of this the track pretty much brought me to tears- the shock of the darkness that they've given to Knowledge was all a bit much.

I remember catching the beginning of Vex'd's set at Bristols Subloaded night and after 20 minutes felt like I simply had to get out of the room due to the intensity of their basslines on a 10k soundsystem. Since then, they've grown on me thanks to the likes of Crusher dub which is a slightly softer tune that sounds a bit like someone trying to tune into a dub station on a crackley radio. I've been a quite a fan of Lion and Pop Pop since I heard Plasticman drop them a while back, but in many ways I feel Vex'd's music improves with age. Whether that's because it's ahead of it's time I don't know but interestingly I currently prefer the original Lion to the remix which I've heard a clip of via
Planet Mu, which has released their album Degenerate. Whilst I havent managed to get my hands on the album yet, the samples, bits and pieces I've heard on Rinse FM and the recent mix for Radio 1's Breezeblock show have made me very excited about doing so. Mary-Anne Hobbs often describes Vex'd as Dubstep pioneers, but I'd be inclined to describe them as Darkstep pioneers. Their music definitely incorporates the deep sub bass, ragga patterns and other styles that influence dubstep but the fury, overwhelming power and progressiveness makes for a sound that is truly individual.

Enough of my chatter though; here's the tracklisting for the Breezeblock show mix. Check for Distance's Fallen which is one of the most beautiful things I've heard for a while and provides a little space in which to be calm in the middle of Vex'd's extremely dark but addictive sound. Oh and watch out for the Knowledge remix if the Zombies in your garden aint buried deeply enough... they're coming to get you.

Pure Youngsta Style

I locked into Youngsta and Task's show just in time for 'the power hour' and kicked of a mean party in my room with Skreamz 'Late night request line.' Smokes, a cup of tea and Rinse FM on a Thursday aint a bad late night affair.

If you didn't listen you missed out on a big show. Task's energy gravitated through the speakers as Youngsta took all headz (I heard ya!) on a special Skreamz and Loefah journey. 'I'/808 Bass into Goatstare into the flutes of Monsoon remix and an evil teaser of Horror Show is one helluva super troopa power move when executed by Youngsta. As if we weren't already tormented enough with his oh so baad habit of mixing dark, moody bass lines with warm dub laced tracks, he then dropped in some D1 before hittin with Twisup remix into Neverland. My stomach is still churning and my toes tingling after this one. The only problem is, my speakers are now fukked.
