JERONA FRUITS UPDATE: FEB 2005
Latest news from one of South London's finest Underground Labels:
"JFEP001: JERONA GLOBAL SESSIONS VOL. 1
Jerona fruits come with their debut ep on the label, featuring outstanding songs from all corners of the world?| Coming soon!
A: Greg Packer & MC Assassin- Supernatural (AUSTRALIA)
No introduction is needed for these two, but we'll give u one anyway. Greg and Assassin follow up their last club smashing release on Jerona Fruits 005, Landslide with a beautifully deep, bass drenched floor filler track. Supernatural has all the ingredients of a great tune, with soundscape pads, heavy beats, loads of low end bass and soulful vocals from the man like Assassin. These guys have proven the public right with this release as Greg and Assassin have recently wiped the floor with the Perth dance music awards, with Greg winning best producer, best dj and best label (interphase) and Mc Assassin picking up best mc of course.
B: Mijatoho vs. Tin man- Better Run (SWITZERLAND)
After his last release on Jerona Fruits 003, Mijatoho has been a busy boy settling down in his studio in Zurich to make some serious beats for the Jerona Fruits camp. Amongst some of his solo projects that will be seen on Jerona Fruits soon and a project with d&b don Mathematics, he has teamed up with Tin man to make Better Run. Their upfront and in your face production method is absolutely outstanding, fantastic use of samples, surgically clean beats and a powerful creeping bassline really push this song out of the speakers and into your head. Big up the Swiss massive!
C:Andyskopes- Africa is Zion (GREAT BRITAIN)
New artist Andyskopes has been bubbling under for a long time now. Already receiving massive support from dj's such as Flight and Bailey amongst many more, this South London bad bwoy has been churning out dubby anthems for Jerona. This is a perfect example of just what he's capable of, managing to be reminiscent of certain great artists on the scene's sound, using dub vocals and lush pads, whilst keeping his very own aggressive edge on the tune and buckets of intelligent drum programming. Africa is Zion is a sure fire hit for anyone who likes their tunes gritty, dubby and soulful.
D: FX909- Bad Attitude (FRANCE)
FX909 has had a lot of recent success on the liquid drum and bass scene all over the world. With recent releases on Defunked, Media and Close Combat Recordings, he's proving himself to be an important part of the growth of the liquid sound in the UK and elsewhere. Jerona Fruits have been working with FX909 for a long time trying to find the right song to put out on this double pack, Bad Attitude is exactly what they were after. With its minimalistic sounds, simple but effective beats and the subbiest bassline you've ever heard, this track sucks you in at the start and spits you out when it's over. A mind blowingly simple and amazing tune.
Jerona Fruits releases continue to obtain huge support from such prestigious DJ's as FLIGHT, SAPPO, LAROQUE, ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, EZ ROLLERS, TRICKSTA, DISTORTED MINDS, LTJ BUKEM, HOLDTIGHT, AQUASKY, BLAME, MOSUS (V RECS/MOVEMENT), GREG PACKER, FX909, KASRA CRITICAL, KUBIKS & BCEE, L DOUBLE, BAILEY and NOOKIE amongst many more.
Release date:Feb 05

05 UPDATE
Ez you lot. Happy New Year to everyone- it's been made happier with the announcement of the DMZ night (see below). Bringing the sub-sub bass back to South London where it truly originates from. Anyone wanna argue with me on that? Apt that it's being held at 3rd Bass-Mass, where the incredible Valve Sound System used to shake up our nerves and cause pleasure and pain from face to feet.. Wicked wicked things.
Apologies for not being too quick with the updates this year... earning a living takes up stoopid amounts of time. I've been meaning to write a list of my highlights of 2004 but haven't had time. Let's just say quickly that the main thing has to be the arrival of all things deep and dubwise. Digital Mystikz, Loefah, Bailey's superb Dubby sets. Sly and Robbie, Augustus Pablo and DJ Skope's recently signed Jah Jah Man have all been on loop over the past few months as has the Run The Road compilation and the new Pitman album. Kode9 and Daddi Gee.. superb, particularly Spit (expect big things from them this year). As for events- Inperspective's Technicality All nighter which fell on my birthday was unbelievably good and had a nice old skool vibe about things. Then there was Jill Scott @ Brixton Academy who showed the place what it really means to be a woman. Grime 2 @ The End, December's Thriller Funk and Youngsta at FWD>> Interviewing Paradox in the back of my old Ford Focus. Happy Days.
Here's a few things I've been feelin' this year:
Music
Masters at work. Big up to the heads who introduced me to the sexy, soulful world of Brazillian House. It's brought a nice party vibe to the top of the hill.
The Heptones- My parents who bought me an album for Xmas because they used to listen to it when they were young... a wise decision.
Saul Williams' new self-titled album- rockier than the last but still strong in lyrics and spirit. It's all about 'African Student Movement'
Exhibition
The Make Trade Fair and Music For Life event at Notting Hill Arts Centre. The opening night saw some Desi Beats from Radio 1 DJ's but for me it made special by a poet called AJA.
Poetry
Benjamin Zephaniah- Tells it how it is.
Art
Saneasitneverwas- the freshest, quirkiest art I've seen for ages. Unfortunately, his site only has a few bits on there.
The art and lyrics of Sean Flynn (as seen in this months Dazed and Confused lyrics and literature special.
Tales Magazine- hard to get hold of but high quality magazine in which artists submit work based on a fairytale. Results are strange and varied.
Web
Martin Clark's blog- informed, interesting and smiling.
www.pockoville.com A crazy world of painting, photography and illustration. Check Ignacio Evangelista in the "Collecting Old Echoes Series."
www.trolleybus.net: Believe it or not, some geezer goes around collecting photos of old trolley buses, including photos of trolley buses in and around SE25. S'all about route 654, pics 39 and 59-61.
Other
Make Poverty History White Bands. Go get em www.makepovertyhistory.com
Cold, sunny winter's days. Anyone who hates winter when days are as beautiful as these doesn't appreciate nature.
Things I'm looking forward to?
Roots Manuva at Brixton Academy- big tings fi gwan.
DMZ,Hyperdub and new label ITAL- you know they're gonna be on it this year
Skope- finally people are recognising one of the baddest DnB DJ's around. (Catch him at the next Tempo Tantrum)
J Da's 1 Xtra show. Wasn't too on it last year, but the man's taste has been improving rapidly. Enjoying the broken beat vibe.
Paradox's next releases...the Drum Funk hero never let's us down.
