I-Spy with my little Eye

Something which looks like... Georgie (scratching her head) and Patrick (taking photos) at the terribly innovative and interesting Original Cultures Showcase at the Truman Breweries back in March. Oh yeah, that Mojito was soo good!

The Hedgehog

I was walking up my street on my way home from work when I kicked something hard on the pavement. THUD.

I looked down and thought it was a football (who'd left one in the middle of the pavement?), only to realise that upon further inspection it was a rather plump hedgehog. I can't recall seeing one before, certainly not one in the wild.

The hedgehog, curled up into its ball, stayed still for a while. Bending down to inspect it closer in the darkness, my bag made a shuffling noise and the hedgehog stirred; I watched it mesmerised for a while; praying that I hadn't hurt it and simultaneously wishing I had my camera. A minute later, it scuttled further down the street into the light of a street lamp where I had opportunity to study it further.

What a beautiful and extraordinary creature. It looked just like the ones I'd seen in cartoons and books, on TV and immortalised in porcelain or wool. Except, this one was all the more special because it was real and right in front of me and I had walked into it (I'm so sorry).

Spending a little more time with it, I then raced inside and got my camera, raced back outside, went back to the spot. It had vanished.

Ostrich-step

DSC_0213
Melly and the Ostrich's

As Decks and the City's Melissa Bradshaw has pointed out in this recent blogpost, she and I went to Cyprus for the forthcoming Qvest Edition last week. Asides from some serious reportage on Napa's music scene and the history of the island (including some beef with neighbouring Turkey), we made friends on road with some BIG, BIG BIRDS (and I aint talking about the ones we saw downing fish bowls in Napa central).

Through an amazing performance involving movement of their big big wings and fluttering of their long ol' eye-lashes they silently explained their sadness at having BIG BIG WINGS but no ability to fly :( . *cry!* Poor Ostrich's, we feel your pain and your heartache... just rest in the knowledge that we will be bringing your story to human dancefloors this summer via the OSTRICH STEP, a sort-of progression of Benga's Chicken Step:

chicken step

Having been SO moved by the lovely Ostrich's, I am currently engaged in intensive studies in the movements of other creatures with useless limbs or vestigial organs... Coming soon to a club near you: The Blind Fish Astyanax Mexicanus Step, Whale-Step (based upon their hind leg bones which they cannot walk with) and The Human Tail Bone Waltz.

Outside In

that woman stumbling / dancing/ jumping/ running around Totnes, Croydon, Brixton, Secret Garden Party, Cargo and Carnival, chatting to strangers, friends and stall owners, wearing silly clothes, cheering any reference to South London, drunk and happy, in love with life and with people, sitting on pavements beating tin drumz with bruised palms, singing her heart out, telling off groups of young boys attempting mischief, discussing the finer points of openess with a white dread who's name and age were 'whatever...,' messy, smiling, laughing....

is also the same woman who used to find it really difficult to go anywhere without a camera and even harder to rrrreally let go and party...hahaha, it's fun!!

hope y'all are having an equally colourful summer. if so...celebrate, it aint over yet! hopefully someone will send me some photos of mine, if not, oh well.

Love

Mum Cuss

Spotted in yesterday's Mirror Newspaper:

"2 LEAFY GREENS

You may have hated the soggy spinach your mum, but served raw it's fresh and tasty. Plus it's packed with folate, a B vitamin that helps keep body cells healthy, prevents anaemia and breaks down homocysteine, an amino acid that increases risk of heart disease."
